OKEx CEO Talk: The Indian Crypto Landscape
OKEx Jumpstart #13: NDN Link (NDN) – A Decentralized Data Transmission Network
Did you know that the internet is overloaded?
Almost 4.57 billion active internet users consume online content every day – movies, online games, videos, and so on. In particular, the internet is facing a massive surge of traffic and usage due to the pandemic, with the demand for live-streaming and video conferencing increased exponentially.
What does it mean? When the current TCP/IP-based internet architecture is heavy-loaded, it may lead to problems in terms of network scalability, controllability, security, and mobility.
That’s where the NDN link comes in.
NDN Link: A trusted decentralized data transmission network
NDN Link aims to combine blockchain technology with the Named Data Networking (NDN) protocol to achieve a more efficient and secure internet infrastructure for global users and businesses.
The design is to replace the TCP/IP protocol and provide a solution to the existing internet infrastructure with surging demand for content fetching and data distribution. It will create an efficient ecosystem for transferring data and a rewarding system for the participants of the network.
How NDN link works?
Fundamentally, all communications on today’s internet rely on internet protocol (IP). So, when you visit a website, your computer goes to a particular server by an IP address of the site to fetch the data.
How is the NDN link protocol different from IP?
NDN is a network protocol that fetches the data you need on the internet by name instead of the location of the IP address.
That means NDN Link Protocol caches the data you have requested before on your router. When you revisit the website, NDN Link can get it from the router instead of going to the server again. If you haven’t visited the website before, it will get from the routers nearest to you to catch the information.
How is it better for data distribution?
First, NDN Link minimizes service interruptions and eases the workload of the network. By distributing data across a peer-to-peer network based on blockchain technology, it reduces the cost of the system architecture and ensures that data will be transferred at low cost quickly without interruptions. In the end, it saves much computing power, avoids service collapse, and overcomes the scalability difficulties caused by centralized IP servers.
What’s more, NDN Link guarantees the security of data for both the servers and end-users. It adopts data-centric authenticity to ensure the data source is safe. NDN Link verifies data to make sure that data was produced and distributed according to the policies and standards of the network. That is why with NDN Link, each piece of data that travels through the network is cryptographically encrypted.
With its consensus algorithm, namely Proof of Transmission (PoT), NDN Link tokens will be used to reward the miners, developers, investors, and the NDN Link Foundation who contributed to the project.
Overall, NDN Link could transform the traditional way of data distribution, thus forging a new way for everyone to do business, communicate with one another, consume content, store data, make payments, and more.
